Kimono: A Demonstration and Celebration of Japanese People's Lives

Japan's unique traditional clothing, the kimono, has evolved over the millennia. Innovative weaving techniques, dyeing processes and embroidery have raised kimono to an art form, both creating them and wearing them. Yoko Rosenthal, certified kimono master, demonstrated how to wear a kimono and shared how people wear kimono - and what kind of kimono they wear - throughout their lives, starting with baby's first visit to the shrine.

This program's recording is in two parts. The first part is Yoko's presentation of the history of the kimono and discussion of how kimono are worn in the modern world. With the translations, the program went a bit long.

The second part is Yoko discussing the fabrics and decorating techniques of the kimono and obi in her personal collection. We wanted to include this interesting quesion and answer session.

You may view the first recording of her presentation and demonstration here.

You may view the second recording of the question and answer session here.
